For those who watch American gods, you’ll have an inkling of where I’m going with this piece.
There is an ongoing struggle between Traditional advertising and digital marketing.
Traditional advertising gods feel digital marketing is disrespectful, while the digital marketing gods feel traditional advertising is old and should disappear. Some old gods of traditional advertising are in support of digital advertising because of technology. Supporters of digital marketing say evolve or die.
The media is like a Genie, it makes campaign wishes come true if implemented. The idea has intercourse with whoever feeds it. It is set to betray the old alliance and join the new, but it becomes skeptical and stays in between, thereby serving as a link between the two parties.
To the old ones, the new forget that without them there would be no present to be in and no future to look forward to. The leader of the old gods known as Odin, or should I give an advertising name which is the old marketing funnel, is infuriated by the vices of the new gods. He feels disrespected and hates them for that.
The digital world also sees him as a threat. They fail to compromise and are therefore at war, but some of the old gods like idea has decided to try to be neutral, but the new gods are lobbying her to join them as she is already seen as a traitor and she would not be welcomed back to the fold of the old gods.
While this struggle continues, it is worthy to note that in the advertising and digital world, experts forget that it is what people do, where they are and how they behave during the consumer journey that matters and planning for them requires a strategy. So I dare to ask: Is your strategy open to possibilities? The war has just begun.
