The strategic incompetence of some in this govt never cease to amaze me. When u mismanage a manageable situation, u create avoidable crisis & chaos. Banning IMN is not a solution. But I also know of the concerns Govt has based on security reports I have seen.
From reports I have seen and my knowledge of global security landscape, the Govt has a cause to be concerned by the activities of Iran backed IMN & Zakzaky. While I cannot go into details here; it is fair to say, not doing anything is not an option for the govt.
Otherwise a major security problem would have been allowed to fester. Those who live in Zaria have stories to tell about some of the activities of IMN, although I do not agree with the manner Govt is dealing with this issue. You don’t break the law in order to uphold it.
The mishandling by the govt is like a case of “trying to frame an already guilty man.” The frame attempt will not only shift sympathy towards him but he will be made to look innocent. This is what has happened in this case. The security report on IMN & their Iran backers is dire.
So d Govt has a cause to be worried and a need to act. But the incompetent handling is creating new problems of its own. Zakzaky should have been released when ordered to do so by the court. There are plenty of ways to keep a tab on his activities without infringing on his rights.
So what should happen now? Based on my assessment, the following steps need to be taken immediately: 1. Free Zakzaky. Accept Iran’s offer to host & treat him 2. Unban IMN. 3. Investigate abuses & killings by security forces as well as violence by some IMN followers.
4. Prosecute all of those found culpable from d security forces & IMN. 5. Establish a Multilateral Security Operation (MSO) targeted at IMN.I will not like to say more on this on social media. Well managed MSO will allow for proactive intervention. This MSO will be local & global
6. Open talks with Iran & use all means at our disposal warn them to keep out of Nigeria’s internal affairs. It is sad to see how greed by those managing our security has made them victims of a single narrative to every challenge. It’s “make money or nothing” for them.
This perverse single story narrative has led to them seeing everything from how they can profit from insecurity rather than manage & resolve it. We can do better. Let’s hope they act with sense and speed before we have an uncontrollable escalation that threatens us all.
Martyrdom is no big deal to the IMN followers. Their conduct evidences their preparedness to die for their leader. The charges against Zakzaky must be well prosecuted if the evidence can be revealed in open court. I know some will never be revealed to protect sources.
Those charges must be maintained against him even if allowed to travel to Iran for treatment. There is a security strategic advantage to him being out of the country for a while. Practitioners know what I mean. But the govt need to shape up and resolve this matter.
The law allows the govt to unproscribe a proscribed body through an application to same court. Banning them doesn’t ban their beliefs. But we must also support competent actions of govt. Creativity & innovation is hallmark of modern security management. Unity secures us all.
Nigerians must be careful not to allow dislike for this govt to inform their position on matters of national security. I know the incompetence of officials have not helped to grow public confidence; but we must be fair & not turn security matters into partisan political game.
