Nigeria born United Kingdom based Careers & Personal Development Coach, Dr. Dípò Awójídé says to o significantly reduce Lagos traffic, there is a need for behavioural change amongst Lagosians.
He said this in a series of tweets on his official and verified twitter handle.
According to him, there is need to educate the road users of the importance of One-by-One approach to road usage.
He said, “Sometimes I wonder the cause of the endless traffic gridlock in Lagos State. I did a quick research and I reckon a lot of Lagosians will agree with my findings.”
“Of course, I know there are about 3-4 million cars plying Lagos roads everyday which is a big concern for a city with a relatively land mass of 900,000sqm.”
“One key fact we can agree on is that Lagos is over-populated, currently hitting about 20 million. So these are enough to trigger traffic anywhere in the world, but let me shock you a bit.”
“Besides potholes, one of the real cause of traffic congestion in Lagos State is improper human behaviour that I chose to tag #TrafficBehaviour”
“At least 10 people tweeted about this fact yesterday.”
“It is a common sight in Lagos to see about 3-4 cars struggling into a space meant for 1 car, and at the end of the day, the vehicles clog up the entire space; then the road becomes blocked, triggering a stand-still situation. I’ve witnessed this several times. #TrafficBehaviour”
There are usually 3 main traffic points in Lagos; the bus stops, traffic light points and the toll points. Traffic at traffic light and toll points are usually more organised and expected, however traffic at bus stops are rowdier, our commercial Danfo drivers the chief culprit.
Apathetic, aggressive, unruly, impatient, wants to have his way, naturally breaks traffic laws, friend to law enforcement officials, traffic is chiefly caused by Danfo drivers who arbitrarily park on the road to ‘pick and drop’ passengers. #TrafficBehaviour
And due to their relationships with the law enforcement officials, they usually get away with it as the latter turns blind eye. Also, passengers of the commercial bus who sometimes influences the drivers to break traffic rules. #TrafficBehaviour
Also, some private car owners are calculated traffic-law-breaker and are part of the problem. Impatient and always quick to offer bribe to enforcement officials. #TrafficBehaviour
Overall, traffic congestion is a deliberate collaboration of all parties in creating a chaotic situation, even the roadside seller who puts her wares on the road. Traffic in Lagos major routes usually cause a chain reaction and leads to a shut-down at another part of Lagos.
There is need to educate the road users of the importance of One-by-One approach to road usage. We also need to ensure free-flowing of traffic by controlling all the elements on the road, making sure they adhere to the traffic rules. #TrafficBehaviour
To significantly reduce Lagos traffic, we need a BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE. While the government is doing everything to fix potholes, sort out Uber Boats and put Lagos in a proper shape, FIXING TRAFFIC CONGESTION IN LAGOS STATE STARTS BY CHANGING OUR ATTITUDE. #TrafficBehaviour
