A Kenyan denied Canadian Visa for a fellowship in the North American country has called out the country anti-African immigration policies.
In a series of tweets on her twitter, she said Africans continue to be denied opportunities just on the basic reason that “they will not return
It would be recalled that CBC.CA, an English online service of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in a report published on the 26th of November, 2019 reported that Visa applicants from Africa have more difficulty securing permission to visit Canada than do travellers from any other continent, and that has some asking whether the system is discriminatory.
The tweets read, “Out of 700+ applications, myself and another amazing young woman were the only Kenyans selected to attend a highly competitive fellowship in Canada. Fully sponsored, flights, stays etc but guess what, VISA DENIED for the both of us!”

“Y’all! The anxiety I had while applying for this visa! Despite collecting all the necessary documentation to prove that I was not going to pitch fort in Canada, roll around in the snow and live happily ever after there, I was still worried about visa application while African.”
“For Canadians to enter Kenya, they only need themselves and their good will. For Kenyans to enter Canada, we need to pour libation, prove we own cars and land, summon all our ancestors’ spirits and lay it all before supreme whiteness.”
“Surreal how our work is good enough to be nominated for an award in partnership with the Canadian High Commission, being invited to the residence but not good enough for entry into Canada.”
“This is an opportunity that would have exposed me to amazing networks, I was going to visit the university of Toronto, Uni of Carleton and speak about @FeministsKE and what we do on a global stage. My itinerary was booked and busy even meetings with ministers and fellow lawyers.”
Africans continue to be denied opportunities just on the basic reason that “they will not return.” African Academic researchers and students with full scholarships still get visa denied because of institutionalised racism.
“While we can bring the conferences to Africa, it is not a long term solution, we need to ensure that anti African immigration policies are called out vehemently and immigration folks put some respect on our names. Talking about “I am not satisfied you will leave Canada” SIS!”
“I am intentional about Kenya, working in Kenya, calling out Kenya, and living in Kenya. The blatant audacity of whiteness and anti African systems to believe that I want to camp in Canada forever in. 2 weather is beyond me.”
