Political analysis and Social Commentator, Ademola Adigun has said Okada riders contribute to the menace of traffic sometimes and can have negative security implications.
Adigun statement is in reaction to the action of the the Lagos State Government banning the operations of Okada and Keke riders in six local governments and nine local council development areas of the state.
Adigun said Lagos needs a mass transit system and Okadas are not mass transit.
According to him, Okada riders also contribute to the menace of traffic sometimes and can have negative security implications.
His post read, “If you stand just before the longest bridge in Nigeria, entering Lagos, just before Berger, you see trucks conveying loads of Okada and would be riders into Lagos.”
“Hordes pour in. All some do is find a place to squat and start business. No registration. No knowledge of routes. No knowledge of safety.”
“There are also legitimate registered firms operating and contributing to revenues. Many use the earnings to feed their families.”
“Lagos needs a mass transit system. Okadas are not mass transit. They however have an advantage, they have lower emissions and reduce cars on the roads. Reducing cars on the road, is a need for Lagos.”
“Okada riders also contribute to the menace of traffic sometimes and can have negative security implications.”
“So how do you take a decision with economic interests and other interests? You regulate and enforce. You license. You use the service to create a contributory economy. You also use it to monitor entrants.”
You also use restriction on routes as done. But you go further than this… Identify, license, register, restrict, enforce and tax!
